TIER IV, the Japanese developer of the open-source Autoware stack, is partnering with Renesas around the R-Car Gen 5 processor family. The first joint demonstration arrives in September, when its AI driving models run on the R-Car X5H at Automotive World 2026 near Tokyo.
The agreement makes the R-Car Gen 5 line a primary reference platform for Autoware, giving automakers and Tier 1 suppliers a ready-made combination of open driving software and automotive-grade silicon.
The target is a single scalable architecture that stretches from Level 2+ and Level 2++ driver assistance to Level 4 autonomy. Developers will get one hardware line that carries both today’s production ADAS software and newer AI-native driving systems, with TIER IV tuning Autoware for the R-Car Gen 5 chips and layering its end-to-end models on top.
Shinpei Kato, TIER IV’s founder and CEO, argues that software-defined vehicles need production-grade computing as much as powerful models, so the systems run efficiently, safely and at scale.
The work may go deeper than one chip generation. TIER IV is developing its own AI accelerators for transformer-based driving models and next-generation sensors including LiDAR and 4D radar. Renesas, for its part, sees the tie-up as a bridge into AI-heavy software-defined vehicle workloads.
