Renesas wants a bigger slice of the humanoid robot bill of materials, and its newest tool for that push is a lab in Beijing. The Physical AI & Robotics Lab opened this week as a workshop where customers can test complete robot systems rather than a display floor.
The facility follows the chipmaker’s Physical AI Division, created on July 1, and anchors its China strategy. Engineers there combine processors, sensors, actuator controls, and power hardware with software so that a whole robot can be checked as one system.
Renesas’ own math says the opportunity is large. Its UX chief Ivo Marocco reckons the company already supplies parts covering roughly 30 percent of a humanoid robot’s components, and that its portfolio in control, power, sensing, and AI could stretch that toward 70 percent.
Yvonne Liu, who runs Renesas China, argues the country’s robotics ecosystem, from customers to universities to startups, is the deepest anywhere, which is why co-development work will happen here. The lab is set up to run projects from proof of concept through deployment.
Renesas plans to pull in the functional-safety and edge AI know-how it built for cars and industrial gear, plus its cloud development platform, as it rides the physical AI wave.
