Lam Research commits $3B to expand its global R&D lab network

Lam Research plans to invest more than $3B over five years to grow lab capacity for AI-era chip process development.

Semiconductor process R&D is becoming a bottleneck of its own, and Lam Research is spending to relieve it. The equipment maker plans to invest more than $3B over five years across its global lab network, a buildout it says will lift experiment capacity by over 50 percent.

The network stretches across the United States, Asia, and Europe and already handles more than one million experiments annually. Individual sites specialize: some work new chemistries and materials, others mechatronics, process development, or customer qualification.

What makes the network unusual is how it is wired: sites share tools, data, and expertise across time zones as an integrated whole. Lam credits that setup with cutting process development time by as much as 2.5 times on recent customer programs.

Construction starts this year, adding capability at multiple sites. The money targets deposition, etch, and advanced packaging, the steps where AI accelerators and memory demand are squeezing tool capacity hardest.

The message to chipmakers is that R&D capacity, not just production equipment, now shapes the roadmap. Lam is betting the AI era keeps demanding new materials and structures long after the current cycle peaks.
