Google backs open-source EDA as OpenROAD principal member

Google joined the OpenROAD Initiative at its highest membership tier to support open-source chip design tools.

The OpenROAD ecosystem wants chip design to become a 24-hour RTL-to-GDSII flow with no human in the loop, and it now has Google’s name behind that ambition.

Google joined the OpenROAD Initiative at the principal tier, the group’s highest. Its technical program manager Aaron Cunningham takes a seat on the governing board, the body that charts strategy, financial stability, and technical stewardship for the nonprofit.

Drew Wingard, who runs silicon infrastructure, tools, and methodology at Google, framed the move around reproducibility, arguing that leading-edge silicon work depends on toolchains engineers can inspect and trust, and pointing to a string of successful tapeouts as evidence the project delivers.

Board member Andrew Kahng of UC San Diego, one of the project’s original architects, called Google a natural partner given its open-source history. The top-tier commitment, he said, secures the long-term governance and funding the ecosystem needs to keep growing.

The timing is notable: commercial EDA vendors are racing to fold AI into their own offerings, and OpenROAD now counts a backer that designs its own silicon and ships open-source software at scale.
