Nvidia’s 800 VDC racks promise denser AI power delivery

An 800 VDC power rack arrives in the second half of 2026 as Nvidia, Google and Microsoft push the standard through OCP.

Nvidia will start shipping an 800-volt DC power rack in the second half of this year, part of a broader push to rewire AI factories for denser compute.

The MGX-compatible rack is designed as a hybrid step for existing buildings: it connects to today’s AC infrastructure but delivers 800 VDC to the compute racks within a row, so operators avoid reworking a facility’s electrical system.

The pitch behind the standard is efficiency. Traditional power paths convert grid AC multiple times before it reaches a GPU, and every stage adds losses that compound as racks get denser. Fewer conversion steps means more of the available power actually reaches the silicon.

Nvidia developed the 800 VDC architecture with Google and Microsoft through the Open Compute Project, publishing a joint white paper in March and the LVDC Solid-State Transformer Specification v0.3 in July. A supply chain is forming around the spec, with equipment and infrastructure vendors already building to it.

Two bigger building blocks follow. A row power center due in 2027 will feed up to 2 megawatts per row over an overhead 800 VDC busway, and a facility-scale DC power block for new sites will convert grid power straight to 800 VDC in one step.

Vladimir Troy, who leads Nvidia’s data center infrastructure group, argues the approach is what lets AI factories hit the performance and density levels the industry needs, pointing to more than 80 companies already building to the standard.
