Intel’s turnaround pitch has a new data point: its 14A manufacturing process is cleaning up faster than any node the company has run in over a decade. Chief Financial Officer David Zinsner told investors at Deutsche Bank’s 2026 Technology Conference that defect density on 14A is beating Intel’s own target curve.
Zinsner described the defect-reduction pace as the strongest since 22nm, the process behind Ivy Bridge and one of the most successful nodes in Intel history. The comparison is significant for a company trying to convince foundry customers its manufacturing operation is competitive again.
Intel’s internal design teams are already building products on 14A, and Zinsner said outside customers have started asking what volumes Intel can supply. The node remains roughly two years from volume: risk production of Intel’s own 14A parts begins in the second half of 2027, with high-volume manufacturing planned for 2028.
Yield experts caution that falling defect density does not guarantee strong final yields, which also hinge on chip size, design and where defects cluster. PDF Solutions, which works with Intel on yield, has signaled confidence in the node’s trajectory.
The progress has limits as a stock story. Intel still books heavy foundry losses, and its shares slipped almost 3 percent after the update as investors focused on the long wait before 14A generates meaningful revenue.
