Anthropic commits $11.6B to Akamai in a record cloud pact

The seven-year agreement is six times the size of a deal the pair struck earlier this year and forces Akamai into a heavy spending cycle.

A seven-year cloud contract worth $11.6B has landed at Akamai, the biggest order the company has taken in its history.

Anthropic signed it. The commitment dwarfs a $1.8B arrangement the pair reported in May, which the new deal exceeds six times over, and it shows how far AI developers will go to reserve compute years ahead.

Collection is back-loaded and not guaranteed. Akamai expects to book nothing from the agreement this year, with payments beginning during 2027 and building through the following year. Delivery and service-availability targets have to be met, and either party can walk away under defined circumstances.

Capex comes first. Building the capacity will cost Akamai roughly $5.5B, and the company has raised its 2026 capital budget to secure components ahead of demand, memory among them.

The same pattern now governs how the largest model developers buy infrastructure: capacity gets reserved years before it is needed, often alongside equity.

The chip angle is easy to miss. As agents shoulder more tasks, room for general-purpose processors grows faster than the accelerator narrative implies.
