TinyGPU v2.0, an open-source graphics chip built from roughly 240,000 transistors, is running real 3D workloads after coming back from a Tiny Tapeout production run, with its developers demonstrating working silicon in a video.
At a 25 MHz clock the tiny GPU renders between 7.5 and 15 FPS in its demo scene. The design performs transformation and lighting plus rasterization, keeps a 4-bit double buffer and an 8-bit depth buffer on QSPI RAM, handles up to 1,000 triangles, applies backface culling, and supports one dynamic directional light with flat shading.
Input comes from a gamepad that rotates the model and the light source. Because the die was manufactured through a Tiny Tapeout shuttle, it will not clock above 25 MHz, but the team is already preparing a v3.0 for later in 2026.
TinyGPU v2.0 emerged from Tiny Tapeout, the program that batches dozens of hobbyist designs onto single multi-project wafers at a fraction of industrial tape-out cost. The project shows how far open-source chip design has come, from logic simulation to working silicon that produces actual graphics output.
