New drone footage of Elon Musk’s Texas chip fab shows construction racing ahead at a site being prepared as an all-in-one logic, memory and packaging facility, Tom’s Hardware reported.
The flyover, the latest in a series of aerial check-ins at the Austin-area complex, reveals foundations expanding and structures rising across a footprint that outside observers say is on track or ahead of schedule.
The project, dubbed TeraFab, was unveiled by Musk in March at a Tesla event. SpaceX filed plans in May for an initial $55B investment, and estimates of the full build-out have run as high as $119B, which would make it one of the largest chipmaking projects ever attempted.
Musk has said Tesla and SpaceX want to secure their own AI chip supply rather than rely entirely on outside vendors, a bet that has drawn both skepticism and serious industry attention. ASML CEO Christophe Fouquet has described Musk as very serious about the megaproject.
The site landed its first major hire in July, an 18-year Intel veteran with 18A process experience joining as a director. Building logic, memory and packaging under one roof would let the project control its entire chipmaking stack. Musk has never built a wafer fab before, and the industry remains split on whether the timeline is realistic.
