The Semiconductor Industry Association welcomed seven R&D awards announced by the CHIPS Research and Development Office totaling $874 million to accelerate semiconductor research for the advanced compute supply chain. The investments target technologies that support AI, healthcare, defense systems, and manufacturing.
“Semiconductor innovation is the foundation of America’s leadership in AI, advanced computing, and the countless technologies that drive our economy and national security,” said John Neuffer, SIA president and CEO. He said the investments will help ensure the United States remains the global leader in chip technology.
Award recipients include SIA member company GlobalFoundries, which received funding for research to accelerate co-packaged optics. The awards are part of a broader push by the CHIPS R&D Office to strengthen America’s innovation ecosystem across the semiconductor value chain.
The news comes as the broader semiconductor industry continues its historic growth trajectory. U.S. semiconductor companies invested a record $76.8 billion on R&D in 2025, according to SIA’s latest State of the Industry report. Global semiconductor sales are projected to reach $1.5 trillion in 2026, nearly double the $795.6 billion recorded in 2025.
SIA emphasized that federally supported research plays a critical role in enhancing private sector investment. Ensuring U.S. chip companies remain at the forefront of innovation requires reliable access to top-tier talent, effective intellectual property protections, and robust science programs that power the industry’s future.
