Huawei’s logic-folding Kirin 9050 Pro debuts inside Mate XT 2

Huawei opened its Mate XT 2 event in Guangzhou on Sept 7 with a processor built around a new scaling philosophy. The Kirin 9050 Pro is the first high-performance chip to reach a mass-market phone using logic folding, a layout that stacks logic units in layers inside a single die to shorten the paths signals travel.

Huawei groups the work under what it calls the Tau Scaling Law, an approach aimed at cutting on-chip signal delay instead of leaning only on smaller transistors. Earlier company estimates credited the folded arrangement with a 53.5% gain in transistor density, a 41% improvement in performance-core power efficiency and clock speeds up to 12.7% higher than a conventional design. State news agency Xinhua noted the launch marks the first time Huawei has introduced a new Kirin at a flagship event since the Mate 40 six years ago.

The chip pairs a nine-core LinxiCore CPU with a Maleoon GPU that adds hardware ray tracing and a Da Vinci NPU built for running large AI models on the device. Huawei’s consumer business chairman called the 9050 Pro the company’s most powerful Kirin yet and claimed roughly 42% more performance than the original Mate XT generation.

The Mate XT 2 itself switches to an inward-folding tri-fold body with a 10.2-inch flexible display, a 6.5-inch cover screen and an optional privacy display, and it ships with HarmonyOS 7. Prices start at RMB 19,999, about $2,800, with sales beginning Sept 12. The phone takes direct aim at Samsung’s tri-fold design while Apple’s first foldable is still expected later this week.
