ByteDance is accelerating development of its next-generation in-house CPU, targeting design completion by early 2027 and mass production in the second half of the year, according to sources cited by South China Morning Post.

An earlier version of the proprietary CPU has been in internal use since late 2025, with strong demand potentially bringing forward tape-out of the new chip. The push reflects ByteDance’s broader strategy of reducing reliance on Intel and AMD, both of which have raised CPU prices 10% to 35% quarter over quarter.

The company is reportedly in discussions with Qualcomm for a potential partnership. Working with the US chipmaker, which manufactures through TSMC, could help ByteDance navigate a supply chain constrained by bottlenecks in wafer fabrication and advanced packaging.

ByteDance’s silicon ambitions come as agentic AI workloads are reshaping the role of CPUs from pure computation to complex task orchestration. The company already runs its Doubao and Seedance AI products on a mix of custom and off-the-shelf hardware, with its own CPUs expected to play a larger role in data center infrastructure.
