Micron’s new RDIMM puts 12TB of DRAM in one server

Micron has demonstrated a 512GB DDR5 module that lets a two-socket server carry 12TB of memory.

A single memory stick now carries half a terabyte, and Micron is the first to show one running inside a standard server. The company calls its 512GB DDR5 RDIMM the densest part of its kind demonstrated to date, and says a two-socket machine with 24 slots could hold 12TB of DRAM.

Speed is rated at 9,200 MT/s. Power draw lands near 16W, which Micron calculates as roughly 60 percent less energy than four 128GB modules doing the same job.

Density comes from stacking DRAM dies vertically, so the part fits the space existing servers already reserve for memory. Operators chasing bigger AI and database working sets can then keep them in fast system memory instead of paging out to storage.

Raj Narasimhan, who runs Micron’s cloud memory business, framed the module as a way to keep very large datasets close to the engines that read them, and to do it inside the chassis customers already own.

Production readiness is slated for 2027. That timing lands in the middle of a DRAM price surge, which turns density per slot into a budget question as much as an engineering one.
