Micron Technology announced plans to invest up to $3 billion in the U.S. semiconductor supply chain, targeting critical manufacturing materials and capacity for advanced memory and storage demanded by AI workloads.
The plan behind the dollars
The investment aims to strengthen supply assurance, improve long-term planning flexibility, and support growing demand for memory solutions driven by artificial intelligence and other data-intensive applications. As part of this commitment, Micron will provide $500 million in strategic financing to GlobalWafers Co., Ltd. for its GlobalWafers America 300mm raw silicon wafer manufacturing facility in Sherman, Texas.
The two companies will also enter into a 10-year supply agreement, granting Micron access to significant raw silicon wafer capacity. This arrangement bolsters the domestic semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem and reduces reliance on overseas supply chains for critical input materials.
Who gets the money and what they will build
“Securing a reliable supply of critical input materials is essential to supporting Micron’s long-term growth and technology roadmap,” said Ben Tessone, senior vice president and chief procurement officer at Micron. The partnership deepens collaboration with a key supplier and supports the expansion of U.S. semiconductor manufacturing infrastructure.
GlobalWafers is currently the only raw silicon wafer supplier participating in the CHIPS for America Program capable of locally producing advanced 300mm wafers in the United States. Doris Hsu, chairperson and CEO of GlobalWafers, emphasized that the collaboration strengthens local manufacturing capabilities and supply chain resilience.
The new tech riding on those bigger wafers
Beyond manufacturing expansion and long-term supply commitments, Micron and GlobalWafers intend to explore collaboration on next-generation wafer technologies and process innovations. These efforts are designed to support future semiconductor manufacturing requirements as memory architectures evolve.
The proposed transaction remains subject to definitive agreements, customary approvals, and closing conditions.
