Demand for silicon carbide power devices is firming again, pulled by electric vehicles, energy infrastructure and the power systems inside AI data centers.
Wolfspeed wants a larger share of the materials side of that market. The company has added a premium grade of 200mm silicon carbide substrate that it says is measurably cleaner than its standard product, with the results confirmed by an accepted X-ray measurement method.
The claim rests on the starting wafer. A better substrate means stronger epitaxial layers and fewer defects carried into the finished device, without customers having to rework their processes. Cengiz Balkas, who leads Wolfspeed’s materials business, said the addition reflects the company’s experience with larger-diameter material.
It is orderable now, drawing on capacity that has been in production for four years, with more of the range promised as demand develops.
The wider bet is that larger wafers cut cost per die. Holding quality across the bigger surface is the hard part, and that is where suppliers will separate.
