Optical modules for AI clusters still line up individual lasers for every wavelength, and Quintessent thinks one chip can replace the whole bank.
The startup, which has raised $40M in a Series A led by Cycle Capital, is now sampling a comb laser built on quantum dot gain material that emits eight precisely spaced wavelengths from a single device under one bias control.
The design sidesteps indium phosphide, the conventional laser material now in short supply, using gallium arsenide quantum dots in the O-band. Quintessent integrates the light source heterogeneously onto standard silicon photonics.
Backers include Foothill Ventures, M Ventures, Osage University Partners, Sierra Ventures, Goldman Sachs XIG-Industry Ventures, and Hina. Proceeds will fund sampling, reliability qualification, and manufacturing scale-up, plus follow-on components such as semiconductor optical amplifiers.
Fewer lasers per module means lower cost and smaller footprints as data centers adopt dense wavelength division multiplexing and silicon photonics enters volume production.
