Microchip Technology has readied a chip-scale atomic clock for space that exploits the fixed vibration frequency of atoms, bringing atomic-grade timing to small satellites. The CSAC-SA65 targets low Earth orbit systems, and for small spacecraft it replaces bulky radiation-hardened timing boxes with a low-power part that keeps the same accuracy, while also fitting military and industrial gear on tight power budgets.
Randy Brudzinski, vice president of Microchip’s frequency and time systems business, said the part closes the gap between atomic-grade accuracy and frugal power use, letting satellites of almost any size hold precision time in orbit.
Drift compounds on long missions, so navigation, communications and science payloads benefit from the clock’s stability, and the new part extends that capability into radiation-heavy orbits where standard electronics degrade.
Microchip frames the launch as a step toward making atomic-grade timing routine in small, power-constrained spacecraft, rather than a feature reserved for large satellites and ground stations.
